EL SOCO

The half-moon wall of black stone that Lanzarote farmers build around a single vine so it survives the trade wind. The shelter it makes is called soco. We build socos for people.

Four keys. One wall. Every one of them lettable.

Three whitewashed volcanic-stone buildings on a private plateau of black lapilli, the Montañas del Fuego on one horizon and the Atlantic on the other. A twelve-metre heated pool, a floodlit glass court at the far corner, and no neighbour in any sightline.

Six years of eruption made the most valuable view in the Atlantic.

Between 1 September 1730 and 16 April 1736 the ground in Yaiza opened and did not close. A quarter of the island went under lava. What was left is a Biosphere Reserve, a landscape protected by law since 1974, and a place 3.42 million people came to look at last year — busiest in March and October, not August.

The idea

Scarcity is the product. Shelter is the format.

New build on rustic land in Lanzarote is close to impossible. A pre-existing traditional building is the only door left open — and on this island, the ruin is the licence. Every El Soco estate starts with one: a walled compound, three to five keys, a heated pool, a serviced court, no neighbour, no street light, an Atlantic wave within twenty minutes.

The historyTimanfaya · La Geria
1730

On the first of September the earth opened at Timanfaya, in the municipality of Yaiza, and burned for six years. The priest of the village wrote the only eyewitness diary. A quarter of the island became new ground — the ground the finca stands on.
